In recent years, the amount of attention focused on single use plastic waste has increased dramatically. Still, little yet is known about the long-term effects on the by the harms of plastic waste on the environment. The major issue we face in Australia is the physical impact on our local marine life: entanglement, ingestion, and starvation. Although it is a major national issue it is reversible and can easily be fixed.
The issue with plastics, in particular single use plastics, is that they are not naturally biodegradable. Single use plastics can remain in the environment for up to 500 years before they decompose and biodegrade. It presents a number of other issues like impacting wildlife and ecosystems, contaminating areas with microplastics and toxins and ending up in landfill around the country with no way of being recycled. How many cleaning bottles are we using every month and just throwing away to be put into landfill or to end up in our oceans?
But... is it all negative? When China refused to accept our plastic waste from 2018 it has had some positive impacts. With less competition for the plastic, local recycling plants could buy it at a more favourable price, which has helped to support our own recycling industry. And the government and industry realised we can no longer export our waste. Unsorted mixed plastics exports will be banned from July 2021 and cleaned and sorted plastics from July 2022.
How can we help make change? We have partnered with REDCYCLE Australia to launch our reuse and refill system. How does it work?
